John Collopy

John is a Melbourne-based freelance lighting and set designer. His work has been seen in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane.

His recent design credits include THE NOSE (The Bloomshed, winner of Sydney Fringe Director’s Choice Award), TOO READY MIRROR (Darebin Arts Speakeasy), and HURLYBURLY (Q44).

He has also designed for UPRISING (Monash Academy of Performing Arts/Malthouse Theatre), SHINING CITY (Q44 Theatre), PINOCCHIO RESTRUNG (A_tistic, Melbourne Fringe), and SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE (MUST), SISTER CITIES (Q44 Theatre), CORIOLANUS (Theatreworks/Burning House), METAMORPHOSES (Monash Academy of Performing Arts), ATHENS REBORN (Melbourne Uni Shakespeare Company), bare: A POP OPERA (Monash Uni Student Theatre), and Yvonne Virsik’s adaptation of THE HANDMAID’S TALE (Monash Uni Student Theatre).

John has also worked as a lighting assistant on MERCILESS GODS (Little Ones Theatre), THE MOORS (Red Stitch), and as a lighting technician at The Coopers Malthouse, Darebin Arts Centre, and Northcote Town Hall.

He has been privileged enough to have worked with directors and theatremakers such as Susie Dee, Fleur Kilpatrick, Yvonne Virsik, Suzanne Heywood, Russell Goldsmith, and Rachel Baring.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts from Monash University, with a major in Theatre and a minor in Performance.
